It has been a long tradition at St. Thomas More that our parish family has offered their time and talents. It is through caring, sharing, and praying that our commuity has grown in love and support of one another. The success of our religious progam depends on the dedicated individuals in our parish willing to share their time, talents, and faith with the future church, our parish children. We encourage all our parishioners, as well as parents of children in our program, to help out in some way.

and anyone willing to volunteer their time to help us run our faith formation program smoothly. 

CATECHIST/VOLUNTEER DESCRIPTIONS

All of the following roles also require that the volunteer is Safe Environment Certified.
 

CATECHIST

"Go make disciples, and teach them everything I have commanded you."

Please consider volunteering as a catechist to teach primary levels Pre-K through 6th grade or junior high levels 7 and 8. We also need high school and Confirmation catechists. This role requires you to bring our young people closer to Jesus and grow in their faith as Catholics. Through their service the catechist nurtures and mentors the faith and spiritual growth of the children they teach so that they may form a firm committment to follow Christ. 

Qualifications of a Catechist: A catechist must be at least eighteen years old, a practicing Catholic in good standing who attends weekly Mass regularly, has a love for children, desires to grow in faith and to share that journey with young people, is able to relate well with others, has a sense of humor and flexibility, and posesses a willingness to be of service to the church. 

Catechist Formation: Teacher training and support is available to all our catechists and classroom volunteers.

Responsibilities of Catechists: 

• Prepare lessons using a teachers manual and other available faith formation resources.
• Be committed to closely following the textbook and STM Faith-Formation curriculum. 
• Arrive at least fifteen minutes before class to set up and greet students. 
• Teach a class (one hour) each week. 
• Attend parish catechist meetings and trainings/workshops as required.
• Must be Safe Environment certified.

Time commitment: A catechist should expect to commit to volunteer time preparing lessons (at least one hour a week), teaching scheduled classes, checking emails and updates from faith-formation staff, and attending catechist meetings/classes/workshops. 
 

SUBSTITUTE CATECHIST

Volunteers are needed to fill in when catechists are absent. This role requires you to be on call for when a catechist is unable to teach, and all of the details listed above are required of substitutes as well. 

TEEN AIDE

Volunteers who are in 8th grade through High School are needed to help out in the classroom every week. Students interested in this position must meet the guidlines listed for catechists above. 

 

CONFIRMATION CORE TEAM MEMBER

Volunteer catechists are needed to form the core team for Confirmation classes. They are required to lead small group sessions and help the Confirmation staff where needed. Those interested in this position must also meet all guidlines listed for catechists above.
