Why a well? The well is the centerpiece of Christ's encounter with the woman who searched for the waters of eternal life. She came to the well with the burdens of her urn, her own past. She found in Jesus the waters which forever quench thirst, the waters we know as Baptism. She also came to see that it is in marriage that the life of faith blossoms both for the spouses and for those children that come forth from it.
Baptism is the beginning of a Christian's life for it is when sin is washed away and the Lord Himself dwells within us. Infants and young children who are baptized rely on the faith of their parents to take on the responsibilities that come with Baptism until they can proclaim belief for themselves after the age of reason (7). It's difficult to fully prepare for this as a parent because one never knows what the specific needs of a child will become overtime, yet faith above all in Christ and in the Sacrament prepares a way for the family to thrive as the microcosm of the Church.
The Society comes in to accompany parents where possible so that they may come to know how to better sereve their small children and learn what it means to be the first and central teacher of the faith. Such service gives families a strong start in catechesis while strengthening member families in parish life along with their understanding of the faith as well.
Parents who go through St. Thomas More's infant Baptism program will spend some time with a member of the society as a part of formal catechesis for the Sacrament and as a means to become more greatly integrated into the life of the parish.
